Minister Hoxha reacted following the cancelation of the Landfill Project funded by the EU
Prishtina, 6 June 2019 - The Minister of European Integration, Dhurata Hoxha, expressed her disappointment with the cancellation of the hazardous waste landfill project in Harilaq of Fushë Kosova, pointing out that neither the Ministry of Environment offered another alternative.
Minister Hoxha stated that “Our country currently is not taking care of hazardous waste and as such it poses a threat to the health of our citizens. The landfill would be risk-free and in line with European standards, as it functions in the EU”.
In the following is given full posting of Minister Hoxha:
“Today, the European Union (EU) has cancelled the project for the construction of hazardous waste landfill in Kosovo.
Despite numerous meetings, requests in writing and our persistence, as consequence of lack of will of local authorities of Fushë Kosova, as competent authority for this matter, this project has not been implemented and our country lost EUR 12 million të Fushë Kosovës.
The Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning identified the location in Harilaq for the project “Design Development for Storage of Hazardous Materials”, but it was rejected by the Municipal Assembly of Fushë Kosova, which resulted in the cancellation of the project. The Ministry of Environment and Spatial Planning did not suggest another alternative location.
It is very disappointing the non-commitment of the local authorities of Fushë Kosovë to the implementation of this project, not fulfilling the responsibility they have towards our citizens, to guarantee a safe environment.
Our country currently is not taking care of hazardous waste and as such it poses a threat to the health of our citizens. The landfill would be risk-free and in line with European standards, as it functions in the EU.”
